Majlis Member Stands up for True Islamic Values

Sunday, July 5th, 2009

Tabriz Majlis member Mas`ud Pezeshkian courageously stood up in the Majlis and gave the reactionary majority a lesson in tolerance and humanism as exemplified in the person Imam Ali. Mr. Pezeshkian was himself a former basiji, but called on the assembled to treat all, friend and foe, with forbearance if they do wrong and to listen to opposing views with patience.

The reference at the end to “2-2, 4-4″ would seem to refer to the electoral code of the front-running candidates, or to something more obscure about Islamic Republican parliamentarianism.

Warm thanks to Mina for her help in some harder-to=hear passages. Passages in Arabic from Imam Ali’s epistles are not translated separately, as they are paraphrased adequately in Persian by the Majlis member.

Dr. Manaf Sababi’s Call on The Turks of Iran to Join the Persians in the Streets

Friday, July 3rd, 2009

Despite a veritable campaign of falsifications, documented on this blog, it is becoming clearer and clearer that Azerbaijan is standing aloof from the struggle against the Ahmadinejad coup. This is not to say that it is neutral in any meaningful sense, but that its politicized population does not have the same zeal for it that they showed, for example, in the defense of their cultural identity, when Tabrizis poured into the streets in the tens of thousands over an insulting cartoon published in a Persian newspaper.

Manaf Sababi

Manaf Sababi

Dr. Sababi is of Iranian Azerbaijani origins and a medical research scientist in Sweden. He has since the mid-1990s been spokesman for the Azerbaijani Swedish Committee of Lund, Sweden and has strong feelings about protecting Azerbaijani culture in the Azerbaijani diaspora. He is, I would say, a mild nationalist in the sense that in the question of the conflict with Armenia, he tried to take into account Armenian views and that he does not indulge in the inflamatory rhetoric used all too often by nationalists in general and Azerbaijani nationalists in particular.

The following is a declaration is being circulated by Dr. Manaf Sababi. It was posted (in Persian) on a militantly Azerbaijanist blog, Sözümüz June 29, 2009.Click here to see the rest of the article.

Iran: Azeris Cautious about Supporting Native Son Mousavi in Tehran Political Fight

Not to endorse the views of this article, which is based on Azerbaijani nationalist sources. But however distorted, it seems to reflect something real happening on the ground.

Rumors of the Uprising

“دماوند پر از برف، تهران پر از حرف”

All my sympathy is with the brave young people in the streets. But we should be careful of rumor-mongering.
Here are some examples. Watch this note, because I will continue adding to it, and others are encouraged to pitch in.
On the other hand, if what I thought was a mere rumor turns out to be correct, I’ll not delete it but cross it out.
So here we go:
