A Strange Picture in the Press
E`temad: In recent days, some extremist newspapers and websites have taken great pains to print pictures which purport to demonstrate, contrary to the statements of the judicial and police officials, that the protesters have confronted the security forces armed. One newspaper, by printing a picture yesterday supposedly of an armed man and choosing the title “Terrorists for Justice” continued along these lines. In the beginning of its report, it tried to connect him with Mir Hosein Musavi’s supporters. It says that Mir Hosein Musavi’s extremist supporters, alongside whom can be seen members of terroristic grouplets and goons and thugs who have damaged public property and destroyed, have looted shops and set the people’s buses and banks on fire and have attacked innocent bystanders. As a result of these riots on Saturday night in Tehran, a number of terrorist elements using firearms have killed ten people and wounded a hundred.

It shows this picture, even though these newspapers won’t even report protests by
Ali Larijani,
Mohammad Reza Bahonar,
Maryam Behruzi, and man other fundamentalists against the public media’s linking the peaceful protests with some unsupportable acts.
This picture is particularly interesting. It is of someone who, according to E`temad’s journalist’s investigation, lives on Fatemi Street. He also walks around on the street on ordinary days, muttering gibberish. As for the gun in his hand, it is a toy machine gun which, according to the source of the picture, which is from a Western journalist, is a toy gun.
In this connection, the Tehran Public and Revolutionary Court has issued a statement about the character of this armed fellow who had been arrested in the recent disturbances says,
The Tehran Public and Revolutionary Court, in a statement, refering to the printing in some reports of a picture of an armed individual bearing a military weapon among yesterday’s rioters participating in Tehran’s disturbances and the announcement of his arrest declared that the armed individual arrested during Saturday’s disturbances has nothing to do with the the picture, and that the security and intelligence forces are carrying out an active investigation into the character of the individual whose picture has been carried in reports.
The Tehran court asks all the dear people of Tehran to consider that a number of compatriots have been shot to death during last night’s disturbances by unknown rioters, if they have any information about the nature of the picture, provide the relevant information to the Central Office of the Tehran Courts or other security or intelligence authorities.
This newsaper still published the original picture on its page three which puts a woman wearing a surgical mask behind this individual. But in Vatan-e Emruz, this woman had been deleted. This newspaper gives the following comment about the pictures: Foreign media have carried the above picture from Saturday afternoon’s riot. This individual can be seen carrying an automatic rifle while standing among the rioters.
